Anna Katherina FEHRING -Pioneer woman of the Yarra-Gippsland Mountain Track

Anna Katherina FEHRING was born 17 Februar 1841 in Zwergen, Cassel in the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Cassel, now Kassel, Hessen, Germany, youngest daughter Fredrikus FEHRING & Anna Catherine BOEHLE. Anna had stayed home to care forhere elderly parents, while one next older surviving brother, Philipp FEHRING & her elder sister Therese Karoline FEHRING, had emigrated to Australia twenty years previous, back in the gold rush times in the 1850s. Therese Caroline FEHRING had married her fellow Zwergen-born Johann Georg BOLTE and emigrated tolther with children to the Ballarat Hinterland Goldfields by about 1858. So, in the light of later history we find that Anna FEHRING was a Great-Aunt of Sir Henry E Bolte, a long-time Premier of Victoria. And, Anna's brother Phillip Johann FEHRING was married at Linton, nr Ballarat in January 1879 to Emma PARKER. He settled along the Murray Valley, first at Torrumbarry and later at Gunbower. So, Anna Katrine Fehring emigrated on her own, in her late thirties. She disembarked at Port Phillip Bay on the ship 'Melbourne' in August 1879. She was soon up the Yarra track beyond Warburton, where she pioneered a wayside lodge on a new fossicker's way that became known as Fehring's, now above and east of the Upper Yarra Reservoir Dam in the ridgeback ranges and fern tree gullies of the fastnessess of the Great Dividing Ranges. She was involved in a number mountain rescues and besides which, her wayside lodge became a haven and stopping place for wayfarers of the mountain track. She was unlucky in love and though she is on record as marrying in 1901 to Friedrich Johann Baecker -aka Backer or Baker, (also included in this index, though it seems a mutual life eluded them. She was Naturalised in Warburton, Victoria in 1898. -By 1902 she wrote that she had been resident on the Yarra Track for 23 years, and at her death in was 40 years in the Upper Yarra Mountains. However her legacy and fame survived her, and Fehring's Clearing, is still shown on maps above what is mapped as Fehring's creek, in the Yarra Forest. Anna Fehring died aged about 80 on the 19th February 1919 at Fehring, below Woods Point, Yarra Track, Victoria.

  1. Very good blogs Wayne. I also have German ancestors, the Fincks. Wilhelm Finck married his English love, Hannah Taylor in New Zealand. The moved to the Bayles area in the early 1880s and became farmers. Hannah died in 1888. Wilhelm moved to Perth accompanied by a few of his children. He died in 1895. His son, Gus was awarded the MM in WW1. in 1930, Gus and his wife, Myra, took their own lives on their farm in Nar Nar Goon. Gus seemed to be very troubled from the war and Myra's mental state was quite fragile. they had no children. My grandparents, Sydney and Alice Hunt lived in belgrave for many years but sadly didn't make the cut in the Silvan list. Syd once worked for J T Mahony. great work Wayne.
